CAIAG presented an early warning system in the Ala‑Archa State Park

On October 22, 2026, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic was provided with equipment for the early warning system regarding the breach of high‑altitude lakes and the threat of flooding in the Ala‑Archa River basin.

The Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences has developed a system for monitoring the level, speed, and noise of water flows in the Ala‑Archa Gorge, transmitting data to the Crisis Management Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, and broadcasting sound signals and alarm announcements in the event of a flood or mudflow threat.

As part of the pilot project “Reducing the Vulnerability of the Population in the Central Asian Region to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods under Climate Change” (GLOFCA), water flow indicators are measured at three locations in the Ala‑Archa State Nature Park, and loudspeakers for broadcasting the alarm signal to the population are installed in five places.

The project is being implemented by CAIAG with the support of the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty and the Adaptation Fund.

Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Nurbek Zhumaliev, and Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty, Amir Pirich, signed a document on the transfer of equipment.

After the official ceremony, the staff of the CAIAG demonstrated the operation of the warning system near the Ak‑Sai River.

The fire and rescue service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations conducted exercises in case of a breach of mountain lakes, demonstrating the procedure for gathering visitors and staff of the Ala‑Archa State Park, their prompt evacuation by bus to a safe zone, and the organization of a rescue operation to lower a victim from the mountain slope and transport them to the emergency medical service.

Over the course of the year, the CAIAG will assist the units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in setting up the equipment.

Based on the results of the pilot project, such a system will be recommended for installation in other regions of the republic.
