On April 23, Bolot Moldobekov and Oliver Bens, Co-Directors of the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences, Head of the CAIAG department Alexandr Zubovich participated in a panel discussion at the session entitled "The Cryosphere of Central Asia: From Scientific Assessment to Joint Actions to Adapt to Climate Change".

The discussion was organized as part of the 2026 Regional Environmental Summit, which is being held April 22-24 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Participants discussed a unified approach to glacier monitoring and the implementation of innovative climate risk assessment tools, as well as the implementation of joint adaptation measures in the face of rapid glacier melt and changing hydrological regimes.

The cryosphere, including glaciers, snow cover, and permafrost, impacts water supply for agriculture, hydropower, and ecosystems.

Based on the discussion, an action plan for the cryosphere will be developed to preserve the region's natural potential.
