Project CAMON

The Central Asia Mountain Observatory Network (CAMON) brings together several observatories (research stations and data-rich areas) in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. CAMON has a long history whereby the oldest stations – Chon Kyzyl-Suu in Kyrgyzstan and Tuyuksu in Kazakhstan – were established in 1948 and 1957, respectively. The newest observatory – Khorog in Tajikistan – began operating recently and is under development. Many started as glaciological stations supplying data to the World Glacier Monitoring Service. More recently, all observatories expanded their programmes to include comprehensive, multidisciplinary, integrated monitoring using both in situ and remote observations. The CAMON observatories are maintained by the regional research institutes and supported by the international partners including the Mountain Research Initiative (MRI)University of Reading (UK), University of Fribourg (Switzerland), German Research Centre for Geosciences, and many other.  The University of Reading helps coordinate CAMON.
