Olympiad from the Kazakh-German University (DKU) in the direction of "Integrated Water Resources Management" (IWRM) within the framework of the "Sustainable Development Goals " developed by the UN among students of Central Asian countries on April 16-19, 2021.

On April 16-19, 2021 Central Asian Youth Association for Water Resources “Central Asia Youth for Water” (“CAY4W”), Kyrgyzstan, together with the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University named after K.I. Skryabin held an Olympiad in the direction of “Integrated Water Resources Management” (IWRM) among students from Central Asian countries at the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University.

The Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences was invited to conduct a master class from international and national experts. Researcher hydrologist Olga Kalashnikova took part in the Olympiad commission and held a master class "The impact of climate change on river flow in Kyrgyzstan" for students participating in the Olympiad.

The Olympiad has been held annually for seven years by the Kazakh-German University (DKU). Since last year, the University has expanded the subjects of the Olympiad and carries it out within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations, thereby helping to build the capacity of future specialists representing the region.

In 2015, 17 goals were formulated by all Member States: to eradicate poverty, protect our planet, improve the quality of life and improve the prospects for all people around the world. The Olympiad touched upon Sustainable Development Goals Nos. 6, 7, 9 and 13 and included the following three sections:

  • Integrated water resources management;
  • Climate change and clean energy;
  • Industrialization, innovation and infrastructure.

With the support of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the database of issues of the first section was updated, which is now based on the GWP toolbox. The main goal was to provide an opportunity for students to learn a tool that is used all over the world. The Olympiad was seen as a way to develop a dialogue between future specialists in world practice and aspects of IWRM. This section of the Olympiad was held under the auspices of the Central Asia Youth for Water (CAY4W), with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. [This information was provided by the national coordinator of the CAY4W network, Meerim Seydakmatova].

This year, the participants of the Olympiad visited the Museum of Water at the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University named after K.I. Skryabin.
