December 11 – International Mountain Day
Roundtable "Glaciers, Water, Food, and Livelihoods in the Mountains and Beyond"
On December 11, the International University of Kyrgyzstan and the Central Asian Institute for Applied Geosciences will organize a discussion of the results of monitoring changes in mountain ecosystems, problems of glacier melting, and water resource depletion.
The roundtable program includes presentations on food security in the mountains and economic aspects of subsistence, high-altitude glaciers, the impact of climate change, and mountain management.
President Sadyr Japarov stated at the General Debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2024: "As a mountainous country, Kyrgyzstan has consistently drawn global attention to the challenges of sustainable development in mountain regions since the early 2000s. With our initiative and the broad support of mountain countries, the «Five-Year Action Plan for the Development of Mountain Regions» is being implemented from 2023 to 2027”.
As a reminder, in 2003, the UN General Assembly, taking note of the Bishkek Mountain Platform—the outcome document of the Bishkek World Mountain Summit—proclaimed December 11 as International Mountain Day.
In 2025, International Mountain Day will be dedicated to the theme " Glaciers matter for water, food and livelihoods in mountains and beyond". The date aims to highlight the need for sustainable development in mountain regions, their critical role as a key source of global freshwater, and promote glacier conservation.
Time: December 11, 2025, 10:00–12:00.
Venue: Bishkek, International University of Kyrgyzstan, 255a Chui Ave., Conference Room 203.
